CRAZY MEN’S SOCCER FINAL WEEK SCENARIOS
The final weekend of Cal Pac regular season play in men's soccer will determine the conference's champion and the league tournament field and pairings. Two teams are in the championship hunt and three teams are battling for the final two tournament spots.
Stanton and Westcliff are the only teams already assured a spot in the tournament and will be the 1-2 seeds…in some order.
Stanton sits atop the table (6-1 Cal Pac, 18 points) and controls its own destiny. A win at Simpson on Thursday clinches a regular season title in the Elks' first year in the NAIA. A tie nets them no worse than a co-title and the #1 tournament seed. [Stanton and Westcliff split their two meetings, but the Elks would get the seeding nod based on fewer goals allowed (2) against the Warriors (3).]
Westcliff (5-1-1, 16 points) is right behind and travels at Simpson on Saturday. The Warriors need the Red Hawks to pin a loss on Stanton then earn a win themselves in order to capture their third consecutive regular season crown.
Pacific Union (1-3-3, 6 points), Simpson (1-3-2, 5 points), and Cal Maritime (1-6, 3 points) each have one league win and are separated by a total of 3 points in the standings.
Cal Maritime faces off with PUC on Friday afternoon in Vallejo with the homestanding Keelhaulers needing a win to keep their tournament hopes alive. A loss or tie against the Pioneers ends Cal Maritime's season, regardless of what Simpson does against the So Cal schools. A victory gives them 6 points, then they await the Red Hawks' results.
A Pacific Union win or tie puts the Pioneers in the playoffs as either the #3 or #4 seeds. A loss could drop them out…if it's by three goals or more (PUC beat Cal Maritime 5-2 in the earlier meeting) AND if Simpson loses twice against the table-topping teams. PUC could be dropped if Simpson passes them in the standings or Maritime wins big. A narrow loss (2 goals or fewer) gets them in.
Simpson needs a point (a tie would do) against either Stanton or Westcliff, as getting to "6" in that category (3 for a win, 1 for a tie) would assure no worse than a tie with Cal Maritime. Both teams beat the other in regular season play, but Simpson allowed just 2 goals while scoring 4 against the 'Haulers giving them a head-to-head tie-breaker edge. Two Simpson losses coupled with a Cal Maritime win leaves the Red Hawks out of the tournament.
But if you love crazy math, here's one scenario for you: Maritime beats PUC, and Simpson ties either Stanton or Westcliff (losing to the other). That means all three teams finish with 6 standings points!
In THAT three-way tie scenario, Maritime is "in" as they have a win against both Pacific Union and Simpson (6 points within the tie, while PUC/SIM have 5 each). If Simpson got its tie against Stanton (which would be the #1 seed), the Red Hawks would be in. If that tie is against Westcliff (the would-be #2) the scores of the matches in descending standings order come into play (fewest total goals allowed in descending order). PUC yielded 11 total goals to Stanton (Simpson 4 so far) and 5 to Westcliff (Simpson 2 so far). Yeah…headaches!
The scenarios will be updated following the Thursday Stanton-at-Simpson match.
All that to get into the 2025 Cal Pac Soccer Championships on Nov. 9 & 11 at Saddleback Stadium in Santa Ana. The winner of the tournament receives the conference's automatic bid to the NAIA national championship field.
