Simpson Wins Penalty Kick Thriller to Reach Final
Simpson advanced to the Cal Pac women's soccer championship game with a thrilling penalty kick victory over Stanton. The Red Hawks prevailed in the shootout, 4-3, with Iris Van Dalfsen saving two shots for SU...and converting the first PK herself.
With the win, the Red Hawks (5-5-4 overall) advance to Tuesday's championship final against top-seeded and #25-ranked Westcliff (16-1-1). This is the first Cal Pac final appearance for Simpson's women. WU is appearing in its third straight title game. The Warriors swept the two regular season matches with Simpson, winning 5-0 and 2-0.
Simpson struck first in regulation when Chloe Tague finished a pass from Litsy Munoz in the 22nd minute to propel #2-seed Simpson to a 1-0 semifinal victory over #3-seed Stanton in the Cal Pac women's soccer tournament. It was Tague's fifth goal of the season.
That score looked like it might stand up, until Stanton's Sitthanun Viriyasujcha converted a free kick which glanced off the goalkeeper and rolled in with 5:01 to play.
Both teams had chances in the overtime periods with close clearances in the box and a ball just over the bar.
The winner of the championship game, which kicks off at 3:00 PM on Nov. 11 in Santa Ana, advances to the NAIA national championship tournament.
