LSU Advances With Upset Win Over UJ

La Sierra's Dean Samuel delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th to lift the #6 seed Golden Eagles past #2 Jamestown (ND) 4-3 in an elimination game of the North Star Athletic Association Baseball Championship in Dickinson, ND.  The win extends LSU's postseason run one more day when they will face another do-or-die contest tomorrow night, May 3, at 7:45 pm (PT).  Note the time change from the original bracket.  The Golden Eagles will play the loser of this afternoon's matchup between #1 Bellevue and #4 Simpson.

Box Score

LSU (20-19) took a 3-1 lead with a three-run 3rd inning rally.  Gavin Copeland singled and two outs later Bobby Benavidez was intentionally walked.  Samuel responded with a three-run shot over the left field fence to clear the bases.

In the 9th, the game tied at 3-3, Copeland again got things started with a single.  Christian Navarro and Benavidez were both hit by a pitch to load the bases for Samuel, who ended the game with his single to center.

Ryan Cole was solid in his eight innings on the mount, scattering 10 hits, one earned run and only walking one while striking out five.  The win went to Nico Masucci, who faced two batters and induced two ground balls—the second an inning-ending double play.

Samuel swung the big bat for LSU, finishing 2-for-5 with four RBI, and Copeland was 2-for-4.

The NSAA was awarded two automatic bids to the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Round, which will begin on May 12 at regional sites.  Regular season champion Bellevue (Neb.) claimed the first spot, and the winner of the postseason tournament claims the second.  If BU wins the postseason tournament, the second automatic bid will go to the tournament's runner-up.
