SU Loses, Faces LSU in Elimination Game

Simpson got on the scoreboard first, but Bellevue (Neb.) scored in each of its four final at bats to earn an 8-3 victory and advance into the semifinal round of the North Star Athletic Association Baseball Championship in Dickinson, ND.  The Red Hawks can still get there themselves, but they have one extra step in front of them—and it involves getting past a familiar opponent.  SU will take on California Pacific Conference rival La Sierra in an elimination game tomorrow night, May 3, at 7:45 pm (PT).  The two teams have met seven times in 2025, and SU has four of them.  Overall, SU holds a 26-17 record against the Golden Eagles since they first squared off in 2017.

SU (21-27) managed only five hits against BU (38-13), but the Red Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the 4th when Mario Catalan singled to center and Cayden Lee launched a two-run shot over the center field wall—his third home run in two games.  SU added a run in the 6th when Dylan Leek tripled with one out and came home on a Catalan sacrifice fly.  Qorey Houston shut down the Bruins for the first four innings, limiting them to just three hits, but BU tied the game in the 5th, added two more in the 6th, one in the 7th, and broke it open with three in the 8th, totaling eight runs on nine hits, including two homers.

The NSAA has two automatic bids to the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round, the first going to BU, the regular season champion.  The tournament champion receives the NSAA's second automatic berth to the Opening Round, which will be played on May 12-15 at regional campus sites.  The national tournament's Opening Round winners move on to the Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series in Lewiston, Ida., on May 23-31.  If the Bruins win the postseason tournament, the second automatic bid will go to the tournament's runner-up.
