Simpson Downs Northern New Mexico in Key MBB Battle
A taut battle between the two teams in Cal Pac men's basketball went to Simpson, as the Red Hawks pulled away late for a 90-83 victory over Northern New Mexico. With the victory SU moved atop the league standings (4-1) and climbed to 11-10 overall.
The league loss was the first for NNMC (3-1, 6-10) which joined the conference this season and plays an abbreviated schedule. The Eagles posted Cal Pac wins over Westcliff, Stanton, and Pacific Union – all games played in Phoenix – to make their presence known in the conference.
Timothy Parker (27 points) and Nian Allen (21 points) led the way for Simpson. Parker was 10-13 from the field, a big reason the Red Hawks shot 55% from the floor in the contest. NNMC had five players in double figures with super sub Diego Sharp pouring in a team-high 18 points in just 16 minutes off the bench.
The next time the Red Hawks and Eagles "might" meet is in the upcoming Cal Pac championships, hosted by Cal Maritime in Vallejo on February 27-March 2. All six men's programs will take part in the tournament, with the top two seeds earning byes into the semifinals on March 1. With an imbalanced schedule the final standings, head-to-head results, and NAIA RPI rankings feed into the seeding committees bracketing assignments.
