Muhammad Named WU Cross Country Head Coach
Westcliff is proud to welcome Abdurrahman Muhammad as the new head coach of its cross-country program, bringing both a personal passion for running and a deep commitment to student mentorship into the role.
Muhammad's journey to WU began long before he stepped into the coaching spotlight. A lifelong runner, he first took to the track as a child in Nigeria, starting with short-distance sprints and eventually transitioning to cross country in 2014. His competitive résumé spans both Nigeria and Turkey, where he competed in numerous cross country and marathon events. But for Muhammad, running has always meant more than medals.
"Every run tells a unique story," Muhammad said. "The runner's high, the mental clarity, the discipline—it's a lifestyle. Running has taught me perseverance and commitment, values that carry over into every part of my life."
After joining WUI in 2022 as an MBA student, Muhammad quickly made an impact off the track. He became a peer mentor with Westcliff Student Life, helping fellow international students adjust to life in the U.S. and succeed academically. That role soon led to the creation of a student running club, where Muhammad merged wellness and community through his love of the sport.
"When the opportunity arose to become Head Coach, it felt like a natural continuation of my journey," he said. "It's an incredible chance to combine my passion for running with my dedication to mentoring students."
The timing couldn't be better for a new era. Westcliff's cross-country program made an early splash with standout runner Kelvin Kiptoo qualifying for nationals in its inaugural season. But after a period of dormancy, the program is ready to rise again.
"My goal is to reignite that fire," Muhammad said. "We're rebuilding on a foundation shaped by Westcliff Athletics' 5Cs: Character, Culture, Community, Commitment, and Championship. These values will guide everything we do."
Muhammad also sees cross country as a deeply personal and uniquely rewarding sport.
"Each athlete experiences it differently. The challenges—endurance, training consistency, recovery—are real. But once you connect with the sport, there's truly nothing like it. It becomes one of the most fulfilling experiences you can have, both physically and mentally."
With a clear vision and a heart for mentorship, Muhammad is ready to lead the Warriors' cross-country program into its next chapter.
"Beyond building a competitive team," he said, "I want to create a lasting culture of unity, growth, and excellence—on and off the course."
