SU Wins Cal Pac, Advances to Postseason
With her team needing a win to claim the program's eighth California Pacific Conference title, Simpson's Jacquelyn Lujan delivered it with an exclamation point, throwing a no-hitter in Thursday's first game against visiting La Sierra, the first of four games in two days, sealing the top spot in the conference standings. The Red Hawks (11-5 in the Cal Pac, 24-19 overall) took three out of four from the Golden Eagles (6-10, 14-21) and qualified for the Continental Athletic Conference Softball Championship, which will be held at Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Ga., May 1-3. Competing in the CAC tournament will be the Red Hawks' pathway for possible automatic NAIA bid.
Lujan was near-perfect in her five-inning stint, walking just two and striking out five. Brianna Lopez-Cortez brought home SU's first run in the bottom of the 1st with a sacrifice fly, and Hollee Jamison followed that with an RBI-single to provide Lujan all the run support she would need. Jamison and Kayley Vaillette both went 3-for-3 in the game, and Madyson Welch added two hits and three RBI.
