WU Drops First Game at CAC Championship
Westcliff opened its postseason run at the Continental Athletic Conference Softball Championship, squaring off against top-seeded Georgia Gwinnett at the Grizzly Softball Complex in Lawrenceville, Ga. The #4 Warriors ran into a huge obstacle in the opener—Grizzlies ace Annalise Jarvis, the Continental Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Year. Jarvis was in control throughout her first six innings of work, allowing just four hits while fanning eight to enter the final inning with a seven-run lead. But the Warriors battled to the end, plating a pair of runs on an Anika Romo pinch-hit two-run homer before falling 7-2. Airilin Ramirez had two of the five hits by the Warriors.
With the loss, the Warriors face an elimination game tomorrow, May 2, at 11:30 am (PT) against the loser of the #3 Florida National-#2 Simpson matchup later today. The CAC champion will represent the league in the Opening Round of the NAIA national tournament, which begins on Monday, May 12, at various regional sites around the country.
WU (21-22) and GGC (41-8) met three weeks ago when the Grizzlies made a West Coast road trip. GGC won both games of the April 9 doubleheader by shutout as three Grizzlies pitchers combined top allow just four hits over 12 innings.
