Simpson Women Stay Perfect in Hoops

Simpson women's basketball rallied from a rough first quarter to beat Northern New Mexico, 67-62, to stay perfect atop the Cal Pac standings (4-0, 12-6 overall). The loss was the first league defeat for NNMC (2-1, 8-11).

NNMC, playing in its first season in the Cal Pac, roared out to a 24-10 advantage after the first ten minutes, holding Simpson scoreless for a six-minute span. The Red Hawks snapped out of that doldrum in the second period, returning the favor on the Eagles with a 21-5 spurt and took the lead at the half (31-29) on a Moriah Bowles three with 15 seconds left.

Bowles and Anna Marshall topped Simpson with 19 points apiece. Jayden Jenkins led NNMC with a double-double of 20 points and 15 rebounds.

Northern New Mexico is playing an abbreviated conference schedule in its first year of membership, but registered victories over Stanton and Pacific Union. All their league games this season were played in Phoenix in partnership with Nelson American Indian College. The Eagles will take part in the conference tournament – hosted by Cal Maritime in Vallejo, Calif., on Feb. 27-Mar. 2 – with the winner of the event earning a bid to the NAIA championships.
