Westcliff Repeats As Champs, Tourney Field Set
The Cal Pac men's soccer championships field is set with Westcliff, UC Merced, La Sierra, and Soka securing their spots. Still, Saturday's final matches will determine if there are co-champions and what the semifinal pairings will be.
No. 18 Westcliff (6-0-1 in conference and 12-1-2 overall) repeats as Cal Pac regular season champions, following Thursday's 4-0 win at Soka. The Warriors, who also secured the tournament's #1 seed, are the first repeat champions since UC Merced in 2018 and '19. They might have to share the trophy with those Bobcats, however.
That is because No. 21 UCM (5-0-1, 9-0-3) stayed unbeaten on the year as they took care of business against Simpson with a 6-0 victory, setting up an opportunity to earn a co-championship with WU. The Bobcats – the #2 seed as they host the Cal Pac men's tournament on Nov. 7-9 – need a win at last-place Cal Maritime Saturday to get a share of their third conference regular season men's soccer crown.
La Sierra (4-3, 12 points) also punched its postseason ticket on Senior Night with a decisive 5-0 win over Providence Christian. The Golden Eagles will be the #3 or #4 seed, pending Saturday's results between Soka and PCC.
Soka (3-2-1, 10 points) is in the tournament, too, despite the loss to WU and one game yet to play. SU owns a tie-breaker edge over Pacific Union (2-3-1, 7 points) despite a 1-1 tie with the Pioneers. The Lions beat LSU (2-0) and the Pioneers fell (0-4). If Soka defeats PCC on Saturday, the Lions will be the #3 seed. A tie or loss puts SU at #4.
Though the Cal Pac has just one automatic bid this year, WU and UCM are the highest rated men's sides in the West this season. Fittingly, UCM and WU tied 0-0 earlier this season. Last year, Westcliff defeated UCM in the tourney title game, but both teams did advance to NAIA national play.
