UCM Falls to EOU in Opening Round
UC Merced started its second trip to the NAIA National Championship with a promising 25-18 win over host Eastern Oregon in the opening set of its First Round match in La Grande, Ore. But the Mountaineers rallied over the next three sets to eliminate the Bobcats from the postseason. The California Pacific Conference regular season and postseason tournament champion, UCM finished a record season with an overall mark of 20-8 and achieved the first 20-win season in program history.
UCM controlled the first set, dominating the net and outhitting EOU .355 to .158. The Bobcats forced nine errors by EOU hitters. The Mountaineers responded with a strong second set and only improved over the final two sets. For UCM, Cal Pac Player of the Year Sera Riley delivered 15 kills, but was the only Bobcat in double figures. Kyra Miller handed out 24 assists, and Ellie Gordon contributed 16. Destiny Lei Romilo anchored the defensive effort with 11 digs, and Morgan Wilson added four solo blocks to go along with a block assist.
